The first hide-a-key rock on the market to incorporate a combination lock

with a realistic faux rock, RocLok, was the brainstorm of real estate Broker Ryan Belshee early in 2007. Having worked with various key hiders during his real estate career, Ryan became familiar with the strengths and weaknesses each offered consumers.

When an opportunity to learn about making faux rock presented it self, Ryan a consummate inventor, started thinking and was surprised to learn that no one had thought to combine the idea of a fake rock hide-a-key with a locking contractor’s box.

In his work with bank owned properties Ryan had extensive experience finding new, non-damaging ways to gain access into homes. One such way was to pick contractor lockboxes that had been left behind in the hopes of finding a key. Scarily, though naïve to art of picking locks, Ryan found breaking into contractors lockboxes only took a matter of minutes and it begged the question that if he could do it shouldn’t everyone be able to? Furthermore, most contractor lockboxes are obvious to the naked eye and all but shout that there is something inside that is important, come in and take it.

Of course alternatively there were those small rocks that had been around for years claiming a safe inconspicuous hiding spot, but honestly these didn’t look very real to Ryan and the easy sliding bottom didn’t evoke a feeling of safety especially if it was to guard access to his home and family.

Thus out of innovation and a want to provide a product that would protect the community, RocLok was officially introduced at a Las Vegas Tradeshow in May 2008. Upon receiving glowing reviews and a slew of offers, Ryan and his wife Melanie returned to Beaverton, Oregon to perfect their product and the very first RocLok was sold that December. Since then RocLok has shipped to more than half the states in the Continental United States as well as Hawaii and Guam. Sells continue to rise as the word about this new way to safely hide-a-key spreads.
